Nowcasting

Estimating the current state of an outcome by adjusting for reporting delays using historical patterns.

Data vintage

A snapshot of a dataset at a particular point in time, capturing the state of reporting at that moment.

R

Reference date

The date an event occurred (e.g. symptom onset, hospital admission).

Report date

The date an event appeared in the surveillance system.

Reporting delay

The time between an event occurring and it appearing in surveillance data.

Reporting triangle

A data structure organising counts by both event date and reporting date, used as input to nowcasting methods.

Right-truncation

The systematic undercounting of recent events because not all cases have been reported yet.
